     For me, the worst part wasn't that I couldn't fit into a smaller dress size...  I could LIVE with a fat body... but it was the anger with MYSELF that was the hardest to deal with. 

     It was all those times that I SWORE to myself that I was going to wake up early to work out tomorrow, but didn't.

     When the alarm clock would go off and it was still dark out, and the thought of getting up so that I could sweat in a place that, frankly, just made me uncomfortable...

     ...So then I'd make a deal with myself, and promise that I'd work out after I got off work that afternoon, but when the afternoon came around... I'd rationalize, "I've had a hard day.  I'm too tired to work out.  I deserve a break after a day like this."  And I'd go home and curl up with some take-out food and watch TV until I fell asleep.

     And it's not like this happened to me ONCE. 

     After a while I just felt like a lazy, hopeless person that has no willpower and would never lose weight.

     It was the same thing when I spent an entire month's rent on this expensive exercise machine from a late-night infomercial... and I remember how excited I was when it arrived...

     I was so optimistic, thinking that this new machine would give me the motivation to stop eating junk all the time.  In fact, instead of eating in front of the television, I would be working out in front of the television!

     But, of course, you probably already know where this is going...  Within two weeks, the fancy, new machine was just gathering dust in my bedroom and the only thing I ever used it for was a towel rack.

Dieting Makes Women Feel Confused, Hopeless, And Lost

     The awful part was the KNOWING, even before I started the next diet or exercise program, that this wasn't going to work either.  I had failed too many times.  I didn't trust myself anymore to follow through.

     Sure, sometimes I'd lose weight in time for that wedding or party or reunion... I might even feel good about myself for a while.  But my genetics were just stronger than my will.  The pounds always came back, and they usually brought along a few of their friends.

    Yes, I blamed my genetics and that made me feel better.  I liked thinking that the responsibility for my ballooning weight was out of my control and that I could do nothing about it even if I wanted to.  But really, deep down inside, I knew that was just a cop-out. 

     What kind of person always breaks the promises that she makes to her self?

     I was so desperate to lose weight that I even bought into those diet pill scams they sell on the internet... and I'm a smart woman

     I feel so stupid now when I look back on that... but I was desperate and willing to try anything.

     For many years I suffered in silence and didn't talk about how disappointed I was with being overweight because I guess I thought I sounded self-centered or narcissistic. 

     I mean, people have much worse problems than being overweight, and frankly I wasn't all that heavy...

     But I just wasn't happy with the way I looked or the way I felt and it was that unhappiness that affected every other area of my life. 

  • I would never go after a guy I really liked because I was sure that he was out of my league. 
  • I didn't like to speak in front of groups because I was certain that everyone was sizing me up and guessing how much I weighed
  • I always thought that if I was passed over for promotion or if I didn't get an invitation to a party that it was all because of my weight...
  • I didn't even like to be hugged by my friends because I was afraid that I must feel fat and mushy.

 I didn't trust myself.  I didn't know who I was anymore-

I couldn't just accept being the "fat girl",

I couldn't stand being the "dieting girl",

     And I was starting to realize that being the "slim girl" was a stupid fantasy that I tried to sell myself like buying a Super-Lotto ticket and imagining what I'd do with all of that money.

Is Losing Weight And Keeping It Off...  Impossible?

     I know I'm not the only one who went through this endless frustration... I look around and it seems like almost every woman I know is caught up in this trap. 

     And even though I always had a few friends who were skinny, and fit, and never had to think about this stuff, never had to deal with these issues in their lives... 

     In my entire life I had never known a single woman who HAD a weight problem, and beat it... FOR GOOD.

     Okay, sure I have had plenty of friends who lost weight and looked great for a while... but permanently?  For say, more than a year?  2 years?  3 years?

     Never.

     Was it possible that losing weight and keeping it off was actually... impossible?

     I mean, I'm sure that some women, somewhere, must succeed.  But, hey, somebody wins that Super Lotto too. 

     It made me not even want to try.

     I mean, why should I suffer through starvation, torture myself with sweaty workouts, take away time that I could be spending with my family or friends or doing something important with my life like making money or working on my career...

     And for what? 

     To gain back all the pounds I may shed temporarily? 

     No thanks.  That did not sound like a good way to spend my time or my energy.  I didn't want to go through that. 

     I would rather not even try than get my hopes up and fail.

My Story

     My name is Andréa, and I first started getting fat when I was a teenager.  I have those unfortunate "fat genes" that you're probably all too familiar with.  My entire family is obese and no one in my family has ever been into exercise or healthy eating.  So I had no positive role models to learn from, and I grew up with the worst eating and lack-of exercise habits.

     By the time I was a teenager, these unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity started to catch up with me very quickly.  Every year I was getting fatter, and I realized that I had to do something about it.

     And as I already told you... I tried EVERYTHING.  And all I managed to lose long-term was a good measure of self-respect.

     When I was fat and out-of-shape, I was desperate to lose weight and that desperation caused me to do a lot of unhealthy things to my body.  I would read books and magazines and they were all telling me that I had to "exercise more and eat less"... so I would starve myself until I was dizzy and I would exercise until my muscles collapsed. 

     But I continued to get fatter and that made me feel weak and pathetic.  I would think, "If only I had more willpower... if only I weren't so lazy... then I could be like one of those skinny women that I see in the magazines and at the gym." 

The Big “Ah-Hah!” That Changed Everything For Me

     After college (50 pounds heavier than when I started) I stumbled upon a new group of friends that would change the way I looked at EVERYTHING.

     As a group, most of them were in fantastic shape.  They had the bodies that I wished I had. 

     Through my experience with this particular group of women, I starting making amazing discoveries that completely changed my thinking about losing weight.

     The first was that there were a few social groups that seemed to defy the national trend of gaining weight. 

     I began looking at all of the other groups of friends that I spent time with and I noticed that different groups were either, almost entirely overweight and out of shape, or almost entirely thin and fit.

     Have you ever heard that old saying that "birds of a feather tend to flock together"?

     Well, it turns out that it goes deeper than this... it's not just that you are attracted to people that are ALREADY like you... but, in fact... you actually BECOME like your friends from spending time with them.

     The people that you spend the most time with, your friends, your family, the people you work with, have a very powerful influence on your eating and exercise habits.

     So I started studying these groups of fit women to see what they were doing differently from the rest of us.

     The first group of women that I started paying attention to were my yoga buddies.
I got some powerful insights there.

     Through taking yoga I had "tuned in" to my body and it's needs.  I was less and less interested in eating for pleasure, and more for nourishing my body.  I was eating less for "emotional" reasons, because I had become so much more emotionally stable and happy with my SELF.

     And that was certainly part of the answer, but I had just scratched the surface...

     I started digging deeper. 

     Other than my yoga buddies, the next group of women that I noticed were in great shape were the "country-club set."  The women who came from very wealthy families.

     Does money make you thin?

     It certainly is an advantage if you can afford the best personal trainers and the best nutritional advice... but that still doesn't give you the ability to stick with it...

     My expensive exercise machine that was gathering dust in my bedroom was proof of that.  Obviously just owning it wasn't enough to get results.

     What the heck was going on here?

     Something else must be at the root of this. 

     I had some friends who were really into nature and the environment- earthy granola types who were always going camping and sponsoring "beach clean up days," who never wore makeup and still managed to look healthy...

     Not only were they all in GREAT shape... so were all of their friends.

     And then there was another group of women that I was just starting to get to know... I guess you could call them "gym rats." 

     I met them through a friend who was working at a tanning salon, and she introduced me to this huge circle of friends, all women who never seemed to lack the discipline to hit the gym...

     In fact, they all seemed to LOVE it.  And, of course they all had the most amazing, lean bodies.

     Sure, they were fit because they worked out all the time... but WHY did they love to go the gym while I could hardly bring myself to go once a month? 

     And finally, the big question:

     Was there something that ALL of these women had in common that allowed them to succeed where I, and everybody I had ever known before had failed?

     Almost as soon as I started trying to answer that question, I made some absolutely unbelievable DISCOVERIES.        For example, I discovered that there is one thing that virtually every one of these women have in common when it comes to the foods they eat --

What's Hidden Inside Your Food?

    It's obvious that the gym-rats are going to be eating healthy food... They work too hard on their bodies not to.

     But the yoga girls and the rich girls and the granola girls are not necessarily against chocolate chip cookies...

     And certainly they aren't all obsessed with health...

     But there is something MUCH MORE IMPORTANT about the way they all eat.

    The nature girls, even if they aren't obsessed with health and fitness, are still shopping at the organic market.  It's a moral standard for them.  They don't want to contribute to the industries that make the chemicals and pesticides.

     My yoga friends felt that putting man-made chemicals into their bodies was bad for them spiritually. 

    Sure they might eat chocolate chip cookies... but you better believe that they are organic chocolate chip cookies.

     And the rich woman who lives in a mansion is not eating ranch dressing flavored corn chips from the super market... she is eating fresh food ... She is not eating fast-food burgers, she is having a salade nicoise at her favorite little café with a glass of white wine.

     In fact, many public health officials have pointed out that working class people are much more likely to be obese than wealthy people because fast food restaurants are mostly built in working-class neighborhoods, while organic supermarket chains are ONLY IN RICH NEIGHBORHOODS. 

     The bottom line is, all of these women have far fewer chemicals in their diets.

     This was my FIRST breakthrough in understanding why some women are thin and others just keep gaining weight.  I call it my "Three C Rule."

"Count Chemicals, Not Calories"

     And guess what... when I started really looking into it, I discovered that these chemicals probably really are responsible for a lot of the obesity in our country.

     Some people have allergies to one or more of these chemicals that make them bloat up.  Many of these chemicals cause food addictions.  And there are many other scientifically verifiable facts that I don't have time to go into here... But think about this:

     10 years ago everyone was talking about how women in France would eat just as much as Americans, but they were always thin... well, not anymore.  The newspapers say that the Europeans are catching up to the Americans in fat... 

     What's changed?

     They are starting to buy more of our "chemically enhanced" foods.

     I had made a real discovery.

     But that was just the beginning.

Why Following The Diet Of A Previously Fat Person Who Lost A Lot Of Weight Is ALL WRONG...

     ...See, everything I ever tried BEFORE to get myself into shape was built around the ideas of "how to get fat people to lose weight." 

     There were fads, scientific studies, gyms, hypnosis, big diet companies, and meetings, and all of them were based on this one central theme:

     How fat people can lose weight, and how other fat people have done it before you...

     Everyone was so busy studying fat people that they weren't looking at the fit people who didn't need to lose weight at all

     But that's exactly what I was doing.  I was looking at different groups of fit people and finding out what commonalities they had.  What they were doing the same.  And I was asking...

     Why were they thin?  Was it really just as simple as genetics?

     Even I was surprised by the answer.

     It turned out that genetics really had very little to do with it at all.

     And when I looked at the way these women lived, and the things they did to ensure that their bodies stayed lean and trim, and compared it with the way everyone I had ever known had tried to get into shape, I also discovered that there are 3 mistakes that virtually all women make when they are trying to lose weight...

     I was making all 3 of them myself... and chances are YOU'RE making them too.

The 3 Deadly Mistakes Women Make With Their Diets When They Are Trying To Lose Weight...
That Actually Make Things WORSE

  >> Mistake #1: Believing That The Key To Losing Weight Is To Eat Less

      It just makes so much sense...

     Even some doctors will tell you that the only way to lose weight is to eat less calories than you are burning... right?

     Wrong.

     Of course "over eating" is a cause of obesity and I'm not saying that eating too much is a good idea, but...

     Watching, spending time with, and really critically observing fit people, I was amazed to see how MUCH they ate.  Sometimes it seemed to me that they ate more than my overweight friends. 

     Of course they were eating DIFFERENT foods, and obviously a lot less "junk food," (the "3-C Rule") but it seemed to me they almost always had something in their hand that they were about to put into their mouth.

     What was going on here?

     Well, I got so confused with the whole thing that I did some research on the Internet, I talked to some professional nutritionists, and finally even spoke with a personal trainer that works with professional athletes.

     She had a unique insight because she had previously been a professional body-builder and she had several clients who she was actively (and very successfully) training to compete on stage as body-builders and fitness models-and nobody knows more about the science of putting on and taking off weight than body builders and fitness models.

     It turns out that there is real science behind this crazy observation I was making, and it has to do with EVOLUTION.

     Our bodies are designed to live through times of plenty and times of famine. 

     In times of plenty, as you probably know, our bodies are designed to store fat for those times of famine...

     But what you probably don't know is that in times of famine, the body does NOT lose fat... not unless it absolutely has to.

     When you start eating fewer calories, the body thinks that food is getting scarce, so the first thing it burns is... muscle.

     That's right, it burns muscle, not fat. 

     Why?

     Because muscle cells burn nearly 5 times more calories than fat cells.  If food is scarce, that hungry muscle has got to go.

     That's why when you first start a diet, you lose a bunch of weight and then suddenly you STOP.  You hit that "plateau".

     What's really going on is that you're body has gotten rid of enough muscle that it can now happily survive on your new, reduced calorie diet.

     Sure, you weigh a few less pounds, but you are weaker, and you now live in a body that has a significantly lower metabolism.  Ouch.

     So now, if you cheat, even a little bit, you seem to gain weight back 10 times faster than you lost it.  Because you no longer have that muscle to burn calories. 

     And building new muscle is hard work... So, instead, when your body gets a few extra calories, it just makes more fat cells... ugh.

     The bottom line:  If you want to lose weight and KEEP IT OFF, eating less is NOT going to work.

     Fortunately I learned that there IS a way to lose weight without starving yourself and losing muscle (in fact, you should actually gain muscle if you do this right), so that your metabolism actually goes UP as you lose the weight.

     Even if you eat the same amount of food that you do now, but follow 3 simple principles in the way you eat...

  1. Eating more frequently throughout the day
  2. Counting Chemicals Not Calories
  3. Some high-quality protein at every meal (digesting protein burns  calories and raises the metabolism)...

     ...You will turn your metabolism way up, and you'll have far more energy and a much better mood throughout the day.

     I know this is much easier said than done, but my discoveries led me to some great tips that will let you smoothly make these changes a part of your long-term lifestyle.

>> Mistake #2:  Thinking That You Can "Crash Diet" Hard And Fast Until You Reach Your Target Weight, And Then You Can Just Coast

     Think again!

     The "common wisdom" goes that if you can do the hard work of taking it off... then just keeping it off will be easy.

     If that were true, you and I would have a lot more skinny friends.

     And I would have been skinny from the FIRST time I lost weight.

     The truth is, you CAN sometimes take off a lot of weight fairly quickly by crash dieting, or cutting out carbs completely, or by working out like crazy and cutting out junk food. 

     We've all done it. 

     There's a class reunion, or a wedding or a party that you know your ex- is going to show up for... and somehow you manage to get back into that dress that you left behind 2 sizes ago.

     But is it easy to keep it off?

     Ha!

     Once you lose your "emergency reason" for losing the weight, your willpower fails, and the weight comes back fast, and usually you put on even more than you lost in the first place.

     The same science is happening that I explained in mistake #1.  You've lowered your metabolism a lot during your crash diet.  So it's even harder than it was before to even maintain your old weight, much less your new weight.

     And any fat you lost was just water from your fat cells.  Your body can put that back so fast that it's unbelievable. 

     It's virtually proven science now that the slower you take it off, the more likely the results will last.

     There's no such thing as "coasting" when it comes to getting into shape. 

     You can't just figure out some way to "suffer" for a short time and think that's going to lead to success.  You need to find a way to lose the weight that you can stick to forever.

     Forever?  That sounds hard!

     Well, that's what I thought at first.  But the fit and healthy people that I studied weren't suffering at all.  In fact... they were, on the whole, much HAPPIER than the heavy people I knew...

     Their moods were more stable, they were depressed much less often, they seemed to have more energy, a brighter outlook on life, and they certainly didn't struggle with their lifestyle to keep their weight off.

     Fortunately I was able to figure out exactly what they were doing that allowed them to not only keep weight from coming back, but to do it in a way that they didn't dread... They actually enjoyed themselves at the same time.

     And the kicker -- it was brain-dead simple.

>> Mistake #3:  Thinking That Your Problem Is "Genetics" or "Willpower"

     One thing that my observations PROVED to me is that "genetics" is NOT the answer to why some people are thin and some people are heavy.

     Is it a factor?

     Of course.

     But unless where you come from, who you hang out with, or how much money you make are genetic, it is most definitely NOT the main factor.

     I was stuck in this negative and endless loop of excuses for way too long myself.  Using genetics as an excuse half the time, and blaming myself for having no willpower the other half of the time.

     I just kept thinking that if only I had more willpower I could say no to that dessert, if only I had more willpower I could stick with a workout routine...

     The truth is that you can't lose weight and keep it off using willpower.

     Sure it's fine for a little while when the most urgent thing in your life is losing weight.  But that doesn't last very long, because there are a LOT of urgent things in life.

     There is always something stressful coming up with family, friends, work, health, relationships... and pretty soon willpower is a joke because you've got more important things to think about, and a pint of ice cream seems like no big deal at all.

     In fact, it shouldn't be a big deal.  And losing weight shouldn't be your priority.

     One of the most bizarre things that I discovered in my journey through this madness was that focusing on losing weight not only never worked, but was actually one of the biggest PROBLEMS that some women had in trying to get into shape.

     Obsessing on losing weight was holding them back and preventing them from being successful.

     How's that for twisted?

      Never the less, when I studied the fit, healthy, lean, and trim women from all of these different groups, virtually none of them ever focused on "losing weight".

     Instead they were focusing on other things -- other things that were just enjoyable and/or habitual parts of their lives that caused them to lose weight...

I Found The Key To Losing Weight And Keeping It Off Forever... And I Want To Share It With YOU

 

     With no real plan at all, but a lot of hope and curiosity, I just started to incorporate the simple things I was learning into my own life one by one...

     And as I did, I discovered that slowly, but surely, and without really consciously thinking about it at all, I was completely amazed to discover that...

I was losing weight.

     ...And not only that, but I was losing dress sizes, and my skin was looking younger, and my body was getting firmer, my hair was shinier, and my nails were growing faster and never breaking. 

     And, best of all, I had so much more energy throughout my entire day. 

     Things that used to be a big chore were suddenly simple.  It wasn't just the fact that I had more energy, but that my mood was so much brighter.  I was getting things done faster and without so much stress about it. 

     Not only was I losing weight, but my body shape... my body composition was changing.  Even when the scale wasn't going down very quickly, I was losing inches on my waist, my butt, my thighs... areas that in the past seemed to stay the same no matter how much weight I had lost.

     This was completely different.

     I couldn't believe it.  I had been over weight for so many years... and in a few months I had completely changed my body and my life.

     I had to buy new clothing, and I was fitting into clothing that I hadn't worn in years...

     You wouldn't even believe me if I told you how many years... but I'm going to tell you anyway...

     One day, standing in front of the mirror, nearly in tears at how blessed I felt to have accomplished so much, to be actually proud of my body for the first time since, probably high-school... I had a crazy thought...

     I went into my closet and dug out a box from that high shelf in the back that you can't reach, where you keep the things that you know you will probably never need again. 

     I took that box down, opened it up, and started sorting through old things that I hadn't even thought about in years.

     And there they were...

     My favorite jeans from high school.

     Completely out of fashion now with their high waist that used to come all the way up to my belly button and skin tight...

     I felt like an idiot.  I felt vain and foolish.  But somehow, seeing my body in the mirror, reminded me of those long-gone days.  And so...

     I put them on.

     And I even buttoned them up... almost to the top!

     There were tears in my eyes.  Me knees went weak.  I actually nearly fainted. 

     I had a friend snap a few pictures of me, feeling foolish and giddy with happiness at the same time.  And then I took off the jeans, folded them up, and put them back in the closet.

     All of this happened without me ever even trying to lose weight

     I was just following the habits of other fit women.

     And so I just kept doing the same thing for the next 2 months, without once stepping onto a scale.  And my body just kept getting leaner and better looking.

     And I remember looking back on that whole high-school-jeans episode a year later, and thinking about how I had exceeded my goals by so far that I couldn't believe it.

My Mission Is To Change The Way Women Lose Weight

     I realized I never really think much about my weight anymore.  I am just living a new life.

     All because I stopped watching how fat people diet and started watching how healthy people LIVED.

     Some of  my friends told me that I should tell other women about my discoveries... that I had to get the word out.  Too many people we know have suffered too long. 

     And really, I'm not talking about suffering because they are overweight-

     I'm talking about suffering because they kept gaining it back...

     suffering because they kept disappointing themselves...

     suffering because slowly, but surely, they were learning to not like themselves...

     suffering because of this horrible cycle that society tells us we have to suffer through.

     I just couldn't stand to watch other women go through what I went through. I wanted to help them feel the glow of success and happiness I felt when I transformed...

     I've been through all the things that you are going through. 

     I am not some doctor or nutritionist or fitness coach (who has probably been a skinny athlete since childhood) who wrote a book to tell you what you should or shouldn't be doing with your life.

     I am a woman who spent years suffering through every stupid diet on the planet.  I was scammed by diet pills on the Internet... and I was so desperate that a few months later, hoping against hope, I got scammed again. 

     I know what it's like to stop liking yourself because you just keep failing at something that in your heart, you know shouldn't even be that important-but it is. 

     I wish I could say that I just wanted to lose weight because of my health or because I wanted more energy... both of these things are most definitely big issues... but the truth is, I wanted to lose weight because there was an entire culture JUDGING me for not being skinny.

     But what I got out of this process was so much more than just looking good, and so much more than not feeling judged anymore.

     I got health.  I got energy.  I got freedom from those dark moods.  But most of all, I got a sense of unbelievable accomplishment. 

     Something I had set out to do so many times before and had beaten me so many times before... I had finally done.

     I beat it.

     And now, I am both proud and humbled to say that I just accomplished another amazing project that I would have never believed that I could have done...

I was one of those that felt like if I starved myself and worked out hard I would burn the calories and the pounds would have to fall off.not so I love the fact that I can basically eat all the time, I walk on my lunch hour and I do some activity when I get home from work, and my body is already changing, and I do feel much cleaner, on the inside and in my mind.  I know that I will have to read the book many more times for it to become the norm for me I was such a snack-aholic.
